The Relationship between Survey Management and Geological Target Objectives

Directional surveys are instrumental to success of oil and gas drilling operations.  Proper Survey Management can help identify survey accuracy requirements in the planning stages to ensure the well meets all directional objectives e.g. offset well collision avoidance and geological target intersection.  During the drilling process survey quality control is critical to ensure the expected performance of survey tools used is achieved.  This presentation will cover the importance of survey data management and discuss many of the survey tools used today to calculate ellipse of uncertainty of wellbores and how that information is used for anti-collision and geological target intersection confidence.

Tim Allen photograph Timothy Allen is Halliburton’s Eurasia Technical Advisor for Wellbore Positioning and Survey Management.  Tim has over nine years of Petroleum Industry experience providing directional MWD accuracy enhancement and Survey Management services.  His focus was on various projects working on difficult directional MWD survey environments, such as high latitudes.  Tim’s work experience spans globally including Alaska, Canada, Norway, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
