Mineral Logging For Oilfield Petrophysicists

While mineral logging shares many similarities with oil and gas well logging, there are also myriad differences. Some of the measurements will be familiar, such as gamma ray, density, resistivity, sonic, and imaging, but the tools used are generally smaller, less expensive, and have reduced or altered capabilities.  The applications for these data are also often different.  Calibrations, particularly of density tools are on a very different level from the oilfield.  Additional unfamiliar measurements are also made, such as magnetic susceptibility.  The end users of the data are also driven by different needs.  Assays, hardness, and moisture are key, while porosity and permeability are seldom mentioned.  The physics of the rocks haven’t changed and indeed porosity and permeability do matter, but are not generally the primary measurements.

This talk is aimed at the oilfield petrophysicist interested in learning more about mineral logging.  It will include an introduction to the logging environment, the measurements made, and the ways in which the data are used.
