Production Logging: the Essential Guide to the Dynamic Behaviour of your Well

Production logging (PL) isn’t exactly new technology – it’s been around for many decades, with its origins in flow profiling and leak detection. In more recent times the applications of PL have expanded enormously to include reservoir pressure estimation, saturation logging and understanding complex flow behaviour in horizontal wells.
But the technique of production logging is not always well understood. Most operating companies do not have an in-house PL interpretation capability, and the responsibility for deploying PL isn’t always clear – is it a petrophysics function, or part of reservoir engineering, or production technology?
This talk will look at the basics of “traditional” production logging, including how flowrates are estimated from spinners and other sensors, and will examine some of the key uses of PL that have implications for all the above disciplines. The speaker will use a range of data sets from several producing basins to illustrate PL interpretation concepts and applications.
About the Presenter:
Nick Last is a petroleum engineer with an academic background in mathematical and computer sciences. He has a particular expertise in petrophysics and well data, acquired by working on rigs, operations and study groups, and classrooms internationally. An independent petrophysicist, he is also the founder of Well Data Quality Assurance, a company that helps upstream organisations optimise the value of their oilfield data. He is an active member of many societies including FESAus/SPWLA, the Professional Petroleum Data Management Association (PPDM), and SARF.
