Geotechnical engineering in mining – What we do and what happens when it goes wrong

Mining geotechnical engineering is a branch of civil engineering that utilises the principles of rock mechanics to assess rock mass response to excavation. This presentation will cover the role and responsibilities of mining geotechnical engineers in day to day operations, data collection and interpretation, geotechnical design methodologies and the consequences of not having enough data.
About the presenter
Dr. Walter Keilich is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer for BHP. In the past 16 years, he has worked as an underground miner, underground mining engineer, researcher and geotechnical engineer. Walter joined BHP in 2014 as a site geotechnical engineer assuming responsibility for the Poitrel and South Walker Creek mines. Walter completed his BE – Mining (Hons) in 2001 and his PhD (Mining/Geotechnical Engineering) in 2009, both from the University of Wollongong. Walter is also a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland.
